Google-y Eyed
January 23rd, 2008 | by Jeniffer |Lately, I have been experimenting with several of Google’s offerings on the web.
These include Google Docs, which as an experiment I have begun using in a project I am working on, Gmail, and Google Calendar.
I chose to do this because Google Search is the homepage on my computer, so I became curious what all those little words were for above the search bar.
My observations So Far:
With Google Docs, you have the advantage of being able to access your documents anywhere. The documents are not stored on your hard drive, so if you are at a friend’s place, or a library, or anywhere there is access to the Internet and a computer handy, you can work on your project. Your documents are saved online for you.
This is handy, if you are out of town on business and happen to have some time to pop into an Internet cafe.
Google Calendar is another Google offering I am trying for the first time.
Again, the information is accessible not only from your own computer at home, but other computers where you happen to log in as well. This could be a big plus for me, if my dream of travelling ever comes true!
You have options of viewing the calendar by the day, week, month, the next 4 days, or in Agenda mode, which displays what events you have entered which are coming up.
It’s easy to add events, and you can specify whether or not the event repeats, and if so, what day it will end.
You can also schedule a reminder, and include the email addresses of others who are invited or you know are attending.
Gmail is also new to me.
You sign in with your Google account (or sign up for one if you don’t already have one).
Then you fill in a simple form including your first and last name, the log in you would like, your password, and your secondary email address, and you are in!
Gmail features 2500 megabytes of free storage.
You are able to archive your emails, rather than deleting them, and rather than being forced to determine which file to put your saved emails into, Gmail allows you to label them. You can choose multiple labels for each email, which is good, because many email are actually about more than one thing.
As well, being Google, they have a search feature, which allows you to search your emails for various things (ie names, label, date, keyword, or other option such as sender.
You ae also able to search the web from gmail.
All of these look fairly promising so far, and after 30 days, I’ll do a fuller report on what I think of them, and how useful they proove to be.
