Ed. Note: This is Part 6 in the series The Achievers. Today’s post is written by Shauana Arthurs, a fellow Canadian who writes to express and share her passion for living life to the fullest. She believes each and every one of us can overcome our barriers and create the lives of our grandest dreams. Impact and the Power of Questions
What has had the most impact on my life, Jeniffer asks. A seemingly simple question: what principle, practice or tool has made the most difference in my life?
Impact itself is a marvellous word - full of power and action and the potential for change. The answer lies in the word CHANGE.
There are general success principles that you will find running through the writings and musings of people who have dedicated their lives to the concept of learning, growing and achieving. The hidden gem underneath this, however, is what has the impact – the willingness to learn, grow, and achieve!
Most of us were never taught personal development skills in school. We weren’t told about the value of persistence, the importance of attitude, the meaning of flexibility and the power in continuous growth and learning. If such words were mentioned at all, it was often in the context of platitudes that did not have real meaning and were not demonstrated. A lifetime of learning and growth should be everyone’s birthright, but unless we are introduced to this philosophy, we often live stagnant lives full of regret and desperation, rather than exciting, vibrant lives full of possibility, promise and dreams realized.
Life is full of flux – like a giant and fascinating kaleidoscope, everything is constantly shifting and changing. New ideas and concepts continuously replace old, and going with the flow means being flexible and always learning. Change is not something to be feared – it is always an opportunity. Any time the nudge of change comes along, it means we have a chance to look at things differently – to expand our horizons. Alternatively, any time we think we know all there is to know, we have settled into stagnancy.
Is it not more exciting to be part of the movement, part of the flow of life?
Being open to change involves having a constant sense of curiosity. It means learning to know and trust yourself enough not to feel threatened by change. It means always learning new things, and listening to the advice of those who have gone before you. Every person you meet has a different perspective, and each will have little gems of knowledge for you if you look for them. Who is to say which small bit of information might be the catalyst you need to catapult your life to the next level?
If you want your life to change, YOU have to be willing to change. Ask yourself questions and be willing to listen to whatever answers you get. Here are some great questions to ask.
w What do I want for my life, now and in the next five, ten and 20 years?
w Is what I’m doing working? Is it possible that I could change a few small things and positively affect my results?
w Who can I learn from that has done this before?
w How do I spend my spare time, and could I be using it more wisely?
w What resources do I have right now in my life that I’m overlooking or not using?

Very nice post, Shauna. I like the way you emphasize the need to stay open to change and growth throughout your life. This seems to be a theme in the blogosphere lately, which suggests to me that it’s a message lots of people need to hear.

Thank you so much, Jeniffer, for including me in your series. I am honoured.
…And thanks for the birthday wishes!
May it be a fantastic year - and life - for all of us!
You know, I like to move often, and travel a lot…and I used to think my love of change was a fault…I am glad to finally embrace it and realize how healthy it is, and to share in this community of like-minded souls!
Cheers,
Shauna

You’re welcome, Shauna.
I really love this series–it’s brought out some of my favorite writers on the web, and they’ve all been so generous with their time and talent.
I’ll be sorry when it ends soon.
Makes me want to start running the entire series all over again!::-)

I really like this post. I think that may be the one thing I managed to teach my daughter as she was growing up. Circumstances were difficult for many reasons, but the one thing that took hold with her was the concept that if something was not working, change it.
